Welcome to our site!
The Working Group on the Historical Study of Race brings together interested faculty at the University of Florida across the humanities. Our goal is to spread the word among colleagues and potential graduate students that the University of Florida has a particular expertise in this area.
We support research and teaching on the history of race, a lecture and film series, and an annual essay contest for outstanding student essays.
The Working Group is currently seeking interested faculty and students to gain visibility at the University of Florida and beyond. Our membership is quickly expanding -- act quick and join the first wave of individuals that will shape this unique collective.
Jonathan Schorsch, (Department of Religion, Columbia University), will be visiting UF next week. On Thursday, Feb 21 at 3:30 (Keene Flint Library he will lead a joint faculty/student seminar on race and religion in the early modern trans-Atlantic world.
We invite all interested faculty and students to attend. Dr. Schorsch has sent us the first chapter of a soon-to be published monograph to be read in advance of Thursday's seminar. The piece is entitled "Still Afraid of the Inquisitions? Methodological Matters in the Study of Colonial Judeoconversos, Afroiberians, Amerindians and Other Others," [available here].
This event is being co-sponsored by the Jewish Studies program and by the Humanities Center.
