Samuel Proctor Oral History Internship Program
The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program offers competitive internships for undergraduates.
- One internship is offered per semester.
- Juniors or seniors in the Honors Program or history majors who have a specific project in mind, or who want to develop their skills in oral history, are preferred.
- The student selected for the internship will earn 3 credit hours under the IDH 4940 rubric and the final grade will be S-U.
- Interns are required to:
- Work approximately 6 hours per week (a flexible schedule is acceptable) and assist the program with research, editing and cataloging the collection.
- Read appropriate literature about oral history.
- Conduct at least two interviews, of their choice, and then transcribe, audit-edit and final edit each interview.
- Write a formal paper/critique of their experiences.
- All written work will be evaluated by the director of the Oral History Program.
In exchange for working in the SPOHP office, interns will be taught about how the program operates, the intricacies of conducting an interview, the skills of transcribing and audit-editing, and, in general, the importance of oral history. We believe that the experience would be beneficial for any student and that the acquired skills would assist them in their graduate work or in their chosen profession. This internship is a rare opportunity to learn about one of the fastest growing disciplines in academia.
