Professor C. John Sommerville received his Ph.D. in 1970
in British History from the University of Iowa, his M.A. in 1963 and his
B.A. in 1960 from the University of Kansas, with additional work at the University
of Reading (UK). He joined University of Florida Department of History in
1971 after teaching at Stanford University. He has published seven books,
including The Secularization of Early Modern England (1992), The
News Revolution in England (1996), The Discovery
Of Childhood In Puritan England (1992),
The Rise and Fall of Childhood (1982), Popular
Religion in Restoration England (1977),
and The Decline of the Secular University (2006). Some
of them have been translated into other languages. He has published 36 articles
and chapters in edited collections. His courses concentrate on England between
the late Medieval period and the late eighteenth century. He has served as
Undergraduate Coordinator and Graduate Coordinator for the History Department,
on the University Graduate Committee, the Library Committee, and repeatedly
on the University Senate, as well as other committees.
Dr. Sommerville appeared in Who’s Who in America, 2003 edn. His research
has been supported by the American Philosophical Association, the Earhart
Foundation, and the National Endowment for the
Humanities. He has been a Senior Fellow at
the Center for the Study of World Religions (Harvard), a member of the Institute
for Advanced Study (Princeton), and a Fellow at the Commonwealth Center for
Cultural Change (Univ. of Virginia). He has presented 40 papers at conferences
and universities, including Harvard, Princeton, Oxford, London, Cambridge,
Virginia, Rutgers and UCLA.
He is currently preparing a book on the definition of religion, and its effect
on current legal, education, political and scholarly debates.
